DIY Soap For Absolute Beginners

Hey Folks

I finally accomplished something I have been wanting to do for some time: Soap! Diy Soap is my new favorite thing, after candle making of course. I am honestly kind of shocked how much I just have gotten into it. Now, I am now looking for molds, colorants, and how to make more in bulk. I don’t plan on selling them in an already saturated market, so I have to fall back for a little bit because my apartment is being filled with soaps and candles.

DIY Soap For Absolute Beginners

Full disclosure: I used a soap making kit from Michaels. I will include a link to that, it’s not an affiliate link.

Step 1:  Gather Soap Making Materials

Kit Includes:

  • 28 oz. Glycerin Soap
  • Lavender fragrance ( I substituted this for essential oils, about 25 drops)
  • Purple colorant
  • Lavender Flowers
  • Plastic cavity mold
  • Paper to place on workspace
  • Microwave safe measuring cup

Step 2: Melt The Soap

Heat up soap, 20-second intervals in the microwave. Now I have to say next time I need to buy another dutch over melting cup like I have for candle making. This really was a deal breaker for me. The soap is supposed to be natural and I am nuking it in the microwave. However, I held my nose and did it so I can learn. Melt all of the soap before adding colorant and fragrance.

I cut off the little pieces and melted 3 at a time. I used less than half the kit so I could only make four soaps at a time.

Step 3: Add colorant & Scent, then pour into mold

Stir in colorant and scent. I used about half of this kit since I was using half the soap. This is the basic part of soap making in molds. It’s really just about melting the soap. The rest is rather simple. I also added some lavender leaves for exfoliation.

Step 4: Wait for the soap to dry

It took about 45 minutes for the soap to dry. I then popped them out of the molds.  They are so pretty. These ones are going to my mom and sister. Ya’ll better like them, LOL.
