I love tempeh. I am so glad I happened across it this year after going to a vegan restaurant. I wondered how they managed to get this bacon taste, without bacon. They told me they used something called tempeh. This is a soy based product that originated in Indonesia. To me, I like it better than tofu, but that could just be because I don’t have the patience to really season tofu the way I want to. What the case, I made what could be described as beef and broccoli with some rice, except the “beef” was tempeh. I have been eating tempeh previously from a package with spices added. I had not yet discovered it could come in a loaf that you can add your own spice to. I was actually kind of shocked to find it at a regular grocery store, without having to fight the crowds at WholeFoods over the weekend.
I was making this post while talking to my sister, so I generally was not concerned about lighting this time. I should re-make and re-shoot when I get my new camera. I am saving for a Canon 70d. I had a nice dslr before but it was stolen. She and I were talking about how I get my protein and how she does not really eat salad, but I told her, I do not eat salad either! I keep trying to explain to my family, I eat a LOT more food than I did when I was not a vegan.
I have heard why people cannot eat this or that, but I do feel for them. She complained about heart issues and high blood pressure, things that are definitely coming from her diet, but for my family.. I did not go to school for that. I went to school to get an Economics degree, so what could I know about food? It’s tough. My family seems to be my biggest critic.
We got off the phone, and I packed everything up for the week. I had a little taste, it was fine. I would not give it 5 stars though. Here’s the recipe below.
- 1 Package of Tempeh
- 1 Table Spoon of Olive Oil
- ¼ Cup of Brown Sugar
- ¼ Cup Rice Wine Vinegar
- Dash of Chili Flakes
- 2 Tablespoons of Sesame Seed Oil
- 3 cloves of fresh garlic
- thumb sized piece of ginger, grated
- 2 green onions chopped
- 1 head of broccoli
- 1 cup of rice (brown preferred)
- Mix sauce ingredients in a bowl. Set Aside.
- Place rice in rice cooker, cook according to directions.
- Brown Tempeh, both sides about 2-3 mins per side.
- Add tempeh and broccoli and sauce in wok, mix in for about 10 mins.
- When rice is done add tempeh, broccoli, and add green onions for decorations.
