Veggie Burgers for the Grill

Hey Folks,

I hope you are having a great day wherever you are reading this. This weekend, we decided to fire up the grill. I could not wait to try this veggie burger recipe I found from Minimalist Baker. We really wanted to enjoy the warm weather, and this recipe was perfect for using the grill for you vegans who want a burger that looks like the other ones. I remember going to a BBQ and we bought veggie burger patties. I vowed never again to have those frozen patties on my plate!

Now, let me tell you, this isn’t a simple recipe. It take a while to get the patties together. You have to cook some rice, and brown some walnuts, and sautee some onions. I will tell you, however, it is totally worth it! The burger tastes awesome and the spice gives it a kick.

The burgers held up nicely on the grill. They appear to be just meat burgers to the naked eye, and my boyfriend loved that aspect. He actually requested the burgers.

The recipe makes about 6-8 burgers depending on how thick you want them, and I think they would be a hit at any BBQ party for the summer.

Despite forgetting my camera battery and having to take pictures on my phone, I managed to get some good shots of the burgers. I hope they look fine. Here is the recipe below!

Veggies burgers perfect for the grill.
  • 1 cup cooked brown rice*
  • 1 cup raw walnuts (or sub bread crumbs)
  • ½ Tbsp olive oil
  • ½ white onion finely diced
  • 1 Tbsp each chili powder, cumin powder, and smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp each sea salt and black pepper, plus more for coating burgers
  • 1 Tbsp coconut sugar (or sub organic brown or muscovado sugar)
  • 1½ cups cooked black beans*, well rinsed, drained and patted dry
  • ⅓ cup panko bread crumbs
  • 3-4 Tbsp vegan BBQ sauce
  1. Cook your brown rice
  2. Heat skillet over medium heat. Toast raw walnuts for about 5 minutes, stirring until they are brown. Do not burn. Set aside to cool.
  3. In a separate pan, sautee onions with about a ½ Tbsp of oil, salt & pepper. Cook until soft and set aside.
  4. Add cooled walnuts to food processor chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, pepper and sugar. Mix into a fine meal.
  5. In a bowl, add the drained beans and mash with a fork.
  6. Add the rice, and walnut mix along with sauteed onion, bread crumbs, and BBQ sauce. Mix together and make the patties.
  7. Set up your grill and grill burger patties, cook 3-4 minutes until browned on each side.
  8. If any leftovers, they will keep together for about 3 days.
